BLAUVELT, N.Y. — Kathleen Sherry Boylan, formerly of Blauvelt, died Monday, Nov. 14. She was 78.
Believing they were unable to have children, she was truly a gift from God to her parents, Patrick and Mary Ellen Carron of Donegal, Ireland and Brooklyn.
After being raised in New York City, she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Hunter College and began what would be her life's work, education. She worked for many years at PS 149 in Harlem. Together with her husband, James Sherry, she moved to Blauvelt in 1960 and started a family while working, raising four children and volunteering at the local library and church educational programs.
In 1989, she moved to Atlanta, where she lived until the late 1990s. While there, she began a career in real estate and developed a passionate interest in officiating rowing regattas. She was proud to have officiated at the 1996 Olympics. After the death of her husband, she returned to her native New York and put her mind to becoming one of the first charter school teachers in New York, teaching at the Sisulu Walker Charter School.
In 2004, she married Hugh Boylan and moved to Sherman, Conn., where she lived out the rest of her days providing love, support, books and laps for her ever growing cohort of 15 grandchildren.
She is survived by her children from her marriage to James Sherry, Kathy Cassidy, Maureen Sherry Klinsky, Carron Sherry and Brian Sherry; 14 grandchildren; and five Boylan step-sons.
